Underestimating Fuel: A Triathlete’s Worst Enemy

Training for an Ironman is no small feat. It requires dedication, rigorous training, and a well-thought-out strategy. Among the many components that make up a successful training regimen, fueling properly stands out as one of the most critical aspects, especially during those long bike rides. Underestimate this, and you could be setting yourself up for failure. Join us this Friday at 6:00 at Tri Peak Athlete for our Nutrition Clinic. Please RSVP at Link

What’s your go-to pre-race meal that never fails to fuel you up and make you smile?

Pizza! (I know — not the answer Hector wants. 🤣)

Tell us about a hilarious race moment that still makes you laugh when you look back on it.

During my first triathlon — the Reebok Women’s Triathlon in September 2003 — I DNFed because I didn’t realize the run was two loops and I finished after one. I just thought I was really fast! I also stopped during IM Cozumel to feed my peanut butter sandwich to stray dogs, which makes my family laugh. (Seems totally normal to me!)

If you could create a new triathlon event combining three completely random activities, what would they be and why?

Dog snuggling, writing/editing a manuscript and eating cheese because I regularly do all of those things and *know* I’d excel at the cheese eating portion.

Share a quirky habit or superstition you have before a race.

Go to the porta potty 10,000 times.

Describe your perfect post-race celebration in three words.

Wearing Normatec boots while I binge watch a comfort show while eating a dessert. (I’m a homebody.)

If you were a superhero with triathlon powers, what would your name be and what abilities would you possess?

The Bionic Woman. I’d never get injured or feel the aches and pains that are part of athlete life in middle age. C’est la vie.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve seen while training for a triathlon?

It never fails to blow me away when I spot someone riding a Huffy or Wal-Mart bike during a 70.3.

Invent a new triathlon gadget that would make training or racing more entertaining. What does it do?

A brain chip with my own personal blooper reel so I could laugh at myself when I’m feeling the burn or reminiscing about the days when doing this was so much easier!

If you had to compete in a triathlon using only household items as equipment, what three items would you choose and how would you incorporate them into the race?

A metal colander for a bike helmet, dog poop bags to hold my nutrition, and my favorite Red Sox hat to wear on the run.

Lastly, share a motivational quote or funny mantra that keeps you going when the going gets tough.

“You don’t need to be fast, you just need to finish.” Thinking that always reminds me to stay present and keep pushing. This sport isn’t about the outcomes for me anymore, it’s about enjoying the ride.
